Welcome to Hotel Hesselet
”The most eloquent hotel in Denmark”
It was in the early 1960´s and successful executives and capitalists were not in fashion. As often as before, Karl Haustrup and Kaj Wolhardt met as friends during a game of golf on Sct. Knuds Golf court in Nyborg.
Here the two cosmopolitans relaxed, exchanged business, jokes and ideas. One idea were destined to be life changing – not only for the two men, their families and their private economy – but for the citizens of Nyborg and the country of Denmark. With this idea a project came to life witch soon would become a living myth. Hotel Hesselet in Nyborg.
Haustrup proposed to Wolhardt that the two of them together should build a small cozy hotel with 18 rooms on the grounds of the golf court. Wolhardt who at the time were living in Japan, and had done that for a couple of years together with his wife, had established a thriving commercial company in the east.
During the Olympics in 1964 Lissi and Karl Haustrup visited Wolhardt in Tokyo. Lise Poulsen, the stepdaughter of Wolhardt was also visiting, and it was at this time the defining moment in the history of Hotel Hesselet happened. – As Lise Poulsen, who herself were trained in the world of hotel management, and who later became the hotels first head of reception tells: We laid on the floor at the Hotel Imperial in Tokyo, and we build Hotel Hesselet from the ground in LEGO.
With detailed mentions in the media, Hotel Hesselet had its opening day on March the 19th 1967 As an architect have I never experienced anything like this before, but it has definitely been a fun project, as Bent Severin said in his opening speech.
Hotel Hesselet is still a privately owned hotel by Sinne & Steen Sørensen.
We wish you a pleasant stay at Hotel Hesselet
